Catalyst 6509-E Supervisor Engine 720 10GE needs to be replaced

Hello,

we have Supervisor Engine 720 10GE (VS-S720-10G) in slot 5 on Catalyst 6509-E.

Slot 6 is free.

We need to replace VS-S720-10G.

Is it possible the following scenario  ?

1. we will insert new VS-S720-10G into the slot 6

2. then we will remove the  faulty VS-S720-10G from the slot 5

Will everything work without interuptions ?

Is any document where I can find step-by-step procedure how to replace VS-S720-10G ?

Thank you for answers.

Jan

Yes your approach is right, remove boot statement from active sup in a slot 5(if image is going to be different in slot 6) and if not then simply insert the sup and let it synch the config, show mod will show status of active and standby sup. once verified remove sup from slot5.

Hi Jan,

In order for this to work correctly, you would need to put the second Sup in slot 6 and needs to have the same exact IOS and hardware components as the sup in slot 5.  Once this is step is complete you need to configure both sups to run in SSO mode.  At that time the primary sup (module-5) becomes the primary sup and module 6 will be the stand-by sup. If you can get to this step without any issue, then you can remove the sup in slot 5 with no downtime, but if you have any issue with sup in module 5 then theses steps are not possible.  If you have an outage window, turn off the switch,  replace the bad sup with the new good sup and that should not cause more then 20 minutes of down time

Hey,

If your faulty SUP works and it can duplicate its configuration on the new one; insert the new SUP (with the exact same software/hardware parameters, as stated in previous reply) in slot 6 th issue the following commands:

Router(config)# redundancy

Router(config-red)# mode sso

Router(config-red)# end

Router# show redundancy states

my state = 13 -ACTIVE

     peer state = 8  -STANDBY HOT    <<< IT SHOULD READ STANDBY HOT THEN YOU REMOVE THE OLD ONE.

           Mode = Duplex

           Unit = Primary

        Unit ID = 5

Redundancy Mode (Operational) = sso

Redundancy Mode (Configured)  = sso

Please rate if helped ;-)

Hope it Helps!
