catalyst port connected - no mac address

I have had this come up a few times but don't really know the reason behind it.

sh int status shows a port as connected but sh mac-address-table does not show an entry for that port. How can this happen and how can I get additional information about the host plugged into this port?

The device attached to that particular port needs to pass traffic so the mac-address table can be updated.
