Catayst Express 500 switches not responding to ping in 1ms

Hi All,

This is my first ever post to these forums and so I am hoping someone can help me understand the expected behaviour:

We have 7 Ciscso Catalyst stacked in this manner via gigabit port uplinks:

DG - 1 - 2

1 - 2 - 3

2 - 3 - 4

3 - 4 - 5

4 - 5 - 6

5 - 6 - 7

6 - 7

When pinging switch to switch via the 1 gigabit uplinks the response time is not 1,s constant, there will be spikes of up to 10ms every 7-8 packets.

When conencting to a pc and pinging the switch it is directly connected to the same symptoms are experienced. I thought the expectation was that with a direct LAN connection to the switchport you would see 1,ms constant pings.

With this scenario in mind, what may be causing the spikes or is this expected round trip times?

Any help would be appreciated.

Many Thanks

I am wondering if all the ports are trunk ports or access ports....if they are trunk, this beahvious can be expected as your spanning tree topology gets bigger and STP algorithms run very frequently and that might be causing this behavior.

Ping response time to network devices is not guaranteed or indicative on anything.
