CDP is not received by neighbor and arp is incomplete

Hi all

my problem still exists with this post

https://supportforums.cisco.com/message/3565377#3565377

and this is a new problem. i dont know the switches are faulty or ..

The problem is :

two switches connected to each other using an access port in vlan 1 (i tested other vlans too)

and they can not ping each other !!!

the pc's connected to these switches can see each other but pinging switches from themselves is not possible

i made a debug cdp packets and events and i found that both are sending cdp but one of them is not receiving it

look at the output of debug cdp and show arp on switches

(note that switch 2 is not receiving cdp and note the incomplete in show arp)

Switch 1

CDP is not received by neighbor and arp is incomplete

I skimmed through the old post, and I agree your issue is a weird one.  If these were my switches, I would immediately upload a new image and start fresh; I hate working with any configurations that are, or have been, used.

From Rommon, format the filesystem and do a file system check; I believe that is what it is called.

Personally, I always configure trunks between switches and will not likely ever configure them as access ports.

On the VLAN interface, be sure to bounce it.  Shut it down and turn it back up.

Keep the ARP cache/MAC table cleared.

This doesn't appear to be a situation where you just need to do something simple like use a xcrossover cable or something.  Start from scratch.  Take your time.  Delete the image, format, make sure the vlan.dat is gone and try from there.

Thanks for your response

I used IOS 12.55 and 58 and now i am using IOS 15 and the problem is there

I did that. trunk did no help

i cleared all configuration. write erase and reload and delete vlan.dat and ...

this is the only thing i didnt do.

how should it be done ?

Boot into rommon by holding the "Mode" button as you switch boots up, or hit the break combo while your switch is booting.  Hit "?", when at the "switch:" prompt.  You should see several commands available.  There are two that I would try.  The format may delete your image, though; not entirely sure.  I can't recall the exact commands.

As for the image, versions 12.55 and 58 worked correctly?  Perhaps, you got a corrupt version of 15.  If your not downloading from Cisco.com, that may be the issue.

i will try rommon

and note that the previous images did not work too

i downloaded the ios from cisco site

any idea about not receiving and that arp incomplete ?

i doubt that switches are fake and faulty (at least one of them)

ARP incomplete shows when the IP address cannot be associated with a MAC address.

Can you upload you configs and a "show version"?
