CE 500 Question

Hello all,

I just got 2 of these switches and I'm not so sure I like them. But, on a different note, I'm sure this is a stupid question but the documentation says "The IP addresses in the 10.0.0.0 network cannot be configured on the switch.", so does that mean I can't use a 10.70.1.1 ip address??

Thanks, I know that is a stupid question and I think I know that answer, but I just wanted to clarify.

Becky

Hi Becky,

If you are running 12.2(25)SEG then you can use it.

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/catex500/12225seg/ol10006.htm#wp71448

This release contains these modified features:

?You can now configure the switch with a 10.0.0.x IP address. In the user guide, ignore

the statement that IP addresses in the 10.0.0.0 network cannot be configured on the

switch. (CSCsc66015)

FIXED IN 12.2(25)SEG

OK JG. Thanks for your help before, but I need to ask another question. My CE500 had ios 12.2(25)FY, so I set up the defaults and then tried to upgrade to IOS 12.2(25)SEG and upon reload I am stuck with a flashing System button. Any ideas or fixes???

Thanks so much!!

Becky

Hi Becky,

Reset the switch to the factory defaults and make the initial configuration again and upgrade it.

To reset a CE500 Switch to the factory default, please complete the following steps:

1. Unplug the power cord from the switch.

2. While plugging back in the power to the Switch, hold setup button.

3. Wait until all LED indicator lights turn amber and release the setup button.

4. When a switch port LED blinks green, connect your PC to that port. This computer must

be configured to get the IP Address via DHCP.

5. Open a web browser. If the browser does not pull up the Switch?s management GUI

automatically, then go to

http://10.0.0.1.

6. Select 'Erase system configuration and Boot with the factory default IOS image' and

click on Submit button.

6. At this moment, the Switch is set back to factory default configuration; proceed with

initial setup procedure again.

The basic procedure to setup a CE500 is:

1. Make sure that nothing is connected to the Switch.

2. Power up the Switch.

3. Wait for the SETUP LED to blink green.

4. Press the setup button. When you press the SETUP button, a Switch Port LED begins

blinking green.

5. When a switch port LED blinks green, connect your PC to that port. This computer must be configured to get the IP Address via DHCP.

6. When the SETUP LED turns green, start a browser session on the PC.

7. Open a web browser. If the browser does not pull up the GUI automatically, then go to

http://10.0.0.1 and configure the device.

8. Enter the network settings, username and password and click Submit.

9. Select the option "No, Thanks" when the switch shows the Recommended Smartport

Assignments windows. You can customize the SmartPort Role assignment later on.

10. Click Submit to save changes and finish basic configuration.

11. Click Restart/Reset on the GUI dashboard.

12. When the Switch comes up, open a browser and go to http://

Address>. Please remember to set up you LAN adapter with an IP Address within the same

Subnet of the Switch management interface.

Thanks so much!! That helped tremendously.

Can I ask one more question, is this switch going to be able ot hand out ip addresses via a windows dhcp server?? For example, if I was using the cli I would put in an ip helper-address statement???

Thank you again for all your help!!

Becky

Hi,

Yes, it is possible. It is important set the ports in the CE500 with the most appropriate smart port role depending on each individual link.

~JG

Thank you!!! It looks like I will be playing with this thing for a few days. I would much rather work in the CLI.

Thanks again!! You may be hearing back from me! :-)
