Cisco 1600 failure

I have an (old) Cisco 1600 which lost it's ability to boot after a power-outage last night. When it boots, it gets to turning off the first two lights but then stops there with the rest of the link lights turned on and SYSTEM turned on too.

I need to know if it's worth my while to try to get it repaired or if getting a 1700 is better?

The 2900XL is a LAN switch that won't work w/ the 1600. So, please try to source the file which is actually for 1600.

Its hard to say you have to get on the console and watch it boot up and see how far it gets when it boots and what error messages you get . It may just have a corrupted image after the power outage.

I suspect it may be the external power supply problem. Try to source one and test again.

The easiest way to consider is the cost and any new requirement in your network. If the existing one is working fine w/o require to upgrade, I won't upgrade it.

However, the 1600 is EOS for a long time, it will not be supported by Cisco for maintenance or upgrade. So your consideration is correct that you can consider a newer model and still supported by Cisco.

Hope this helps.

I now have a "diagnosis". The bootimage is destroyed - the image file is size 0 ...

I'm trying to download an image from cisco.com, but it simply doesn't seem to exist?

Where do I get a boot image for the device? Also, CICSO had a list of like 15 different subversions - I don't know which of those versions I use. How can I get details from the firmware (if that's where it's located) to tell me which exact model I use?

I believe if you cannot boot up the machine, even you downloaded the file from Cisco. You still not able to upload the boot image. And if you do not have the support contract, you cannot download such kind of files from Cisco. Please check below link for the procedure if it can help to recovered from a working 1600.

Ok, the "boot loader" version says C2900XL - so I assume it's an XL model. Those I can download - wooohoo - maybe I can save this guy after all.

Now comes the big question whether I can get the boot image loaded from the boot prompt. I saw something with a kermit session .... I'll keep things posted here.

The 2900XL is a LAN switch that won't work w/ the 1600. So, please try to source the file which is actually for 1600.

ARGH - yes, you're right.

Problem is I wrote wrong, it's a Catalyst 2900 series switch ... not 1600. This is what happens when you do things from memory. I wrote the initial message from home instead of work.

We actually have a 1600 but it works great. Sorry about the confusion.

I am now uploaded the found 2900XL to the flash using XMODEM (I have not used that protocol for 10-some years!). Hopefully this fixes the issue and "all" I have to do, is reconfigure the switch.

It is great that you solved it yourself quickly. :)

Well, yeah. Once I get the thing to respond I can move forward. Problem right now is, that of all the 2900 series IOS I can find, they all require 4MB of Flash. I have 1.5 on this old one.

Is it unpluged by someone ? I never find there is 1.5MB flash in a switch. You may need to source the memory and install it to the switch....

I'm sorry, but I don't understand. The switch has flash, but only 1.5MB (actually 1.7 something). What you do mean by "source the memory" ??

I need the boot image - putting that in volatile memory makes no sense?

Ok, I'm stuck again; unable to locate an image that'll fit on the current 1.5MB flash. I'm down to googling for old archives.

Why is it, that when you backup image computer crashes, a couple of weeks later your "production" image fails? grrrr

I found a standard edition binary that would fit. Not through the support site, but via a "back link" in a manual, which discussed recovering/upgrading the IOS.

I'm not very happy with the Cisco support site. While my company is a cisco partner, I'm a system architect, not a network specialist so this detailed work is new to me (anyone reading this thread probably saw that immediately).

Thanks for everyone's feedback on this! I really apprechiate feedback on a Sunday night :)

Don't worry. Cisco web is already very good compare to some vendors that is easy to seach for suitable doc.

For the file from Google, please ensure that is working on your 2900XL switch. I do not have partner access, I can't find an image which is smaller than 1.5M... Can you advise the filename of your finding ?

My "source the memory..." means try to purchase additional flash memory from the market (I suspect you cannot get it from Cisco now) and install it into the switch to make it work w/ newer ver. of image file.

Hope this help.
