Hiya,

Basically you have to use two commands.

1)sh int counters ,which will provide data flow info on each interface ,you can clear counters on all ports. If you find any or many with 0, then go on that interface and issue .

2)sh int gigabitEthernet 0/X

and look for

" Last input never, output never, output hang never

Last clearing of "show interface" counters never " or something like that

"Last input never, output 23w2d, output hang never"

This will confirm that, How long that port has been used or not used at all .

Hopes this helps

Hi,

You can use the "show interfaces status" command for this. Any port with its status being "up" is being used.

Yes I Know, but I need to know if the port is really not in use or if it is not in use in that moment.

Hi,

You may need to check your network design or cableing for this switch.

"Show int status" will provide you the information.

connected > port is connected to device

not connected > ports in use no device connected

Diabled > port is admin down.

If you know which ports are not used you can shut the interface and the status will be shon as disabled

Really not in use are ports with with Disabled status. (If admin down)

Not in use in the movement "not connected"

Hope this helps

The only way to know if its free is as others have said . It would be nice if cisco would put an equivalent of the "show interfaces link" commnad that is used on the cat 4500 series , that tells you exactly when the port was last used but it only works on the 4500's.
