Cisco 4948 10G Switch uplink port for SAN

Hello Experts,

Can I use the 10 Gig uplink port of switch 4948 10G to connect the SAN, if possible. If yes then I would use both ports and make a logical port channel by adding both 10 Gig Ports (Please correct me if I'm wrong here). Also if I use both ports and in future I add another same switch for redundancy so can I use the normal port to connect both switches? I need your advice on this... Is it recommended as I would like to use best practice for my network..

Thanks..

Hi,

Yes, you can connect the uplink ports to your SAN.  Uplink ports are like any other ports.  They can be connected to another switch, a server, SAN or any other device that has a 10Gig interface.

Also if I use both ports and in future I add another same switch for redundancy so can I use the normal port to connect both switches? I need your advice on this... Is it recommended as I would like to use best practice for my network..

Yes, you can use any other ports to connect the switches together, however it is usually recommended to use 1Gig ports to end hosts and 10Gig ports for uplinks between switches.

As Reza has already described, you can pretty much use any 4948-10g port for any purpose.  Normally you use 10g port where you expect to have the most traffic.

If you do use both your 10g ports for something like SAN, when interconnecting switches, you often also have the option to port-channel them too.  Remember (if you have the ports free), you can port-channel up to 8 ports (I recall on a 4948).  Binary multiples work best (i.e. 2, 4, 8).

When doing any port-channeling, don't forget to insure you're using the best hash algorithm for your traffic.

What does it mean of best hash algorithm of traffic?

Please explain in details.
