Cisco 4948 10G Switch

Hello Experts,

We purchased a new switch model Cisco 4948 10GE for our Data Center that I need to configure it so please provide your feedback on following queries:

What software IOS version is recommended? I saw on the website the latest version 15.x is avaibale. The switch will be used for normal network so I think the base image would be useful (please suggest)

Should I configure the management port which is a different port just under the console port or I can use the normal port? Please provide the config to configure the management port.

Thanks.

Re: Cisco 4948 10G Switch

As far as IOS, I would go with the latest stable release. However, some people say you should go with an image that has been out for 90 days or more so issues can be dealt with. It's a matter of preference per person I find, depending on the situation.

As far as the image, choose the one that will provide you with what you need to do. Without knowing your exact needs, it's hard to suggest. However, the base image should cover most LAN type needs if all you're doing is basic switching at layer2 and/or basic routing at layer3.

The seperate management port on the switch is configured as a vrf interface on the switch. This keeps the routing table for this interface separate from the main switches routing table (if you are doing layer3 interfaces as part of your setup). Things such as default gateway, static routes, etc... I also believe this port is completely seperate from the switching bus but I'm no 100% sure so its best to do your research. As with the other things, using the mgmt port is all personal preference and your particular needs.
