Cisco 6509 Catalyst Switch

Catalyst 6509 IOS 12.2 (18)

Upgraded our Core Switch Last Night from COS to IOS. In the process we installed new blades. (6748-10/100/1000). We were only able to install the new blades into Slot 6 along with the new Sup 720 in Slot 5. The Switch would not recognized the new blades in any other slot, but Slot 6. Although we installed a new Gig-E blade 6724 into Slot 2. Any Ideas

Hi,

I don't see any such restriction for 6748 interface modules on Cisco 6509.....

What error your getting while installing in other slot positions???

It sounds like you are exceeding your power requirements. Slot 5 and 6 have reserved power allocated even if you don't insert a Supervisor module in them, that's the reason the 6748 works there.

What model of power supply you are using ?

How many linecards and supervisor modules ?

Please post their complete model number.

FYI, the 6748 consumes 7 Amps while the 6724 consumes 2.23 Amps.

Yes, you don't have enough power.

As I stated before, module 5 and 6 have pre-allocated power even if you don't have any module inserted.

As you see you have 2.86 Amps left and 6748 requires 7 Amps.

You need to upgrade your power supplies.

Thank You
