Cisco 6509 software upgrade

Alexander Yug
Level 1
Level 1

Hello everyone. I have Cisco 6509-E with two (active and hot) supervisors SUP720-3B installed. IOS version 12.2.(33)SXI3 installed from factory. I've tried to upgrdade software to version 12.2.(33)SXI12 using instructions from document http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/switches/catalyst-6500-series-switches/71585-cat6k-red-supeng-swimg-upg.html (Catalyst 6000/6500 Series Switches with Redundant Supervisor Engines Software Image Upgrade Configuration Example). I've complited 9 steps and after reset the module it goes to ROMmon. Error messages are:

Feb 21 04:23:05.898: %PFREDUN-SP-4-VERSION_MISMATCH: Defaulting to RPR mode (Dif

ferent sw versions)

Feb 21 04:23:05.902: %PFREDUN-SP-3-CCMODE_MISMATCH: Standby Supervisor cannot su

pport Configured Card Mode DFC-ONLY(0x1) due to Redundancy mode RPR(enf mask 0x1

, cap mask 0x1, msg ver 0x1)!

Feb 21 04:23:12.312: %PFREDUN-SP-6-ACTIVE: Standby processor removed or reloaded

, changing to Simplex mode

Feb 21 04:23:12.316: %OIR-SP-3-PWRCYCLE: Card in module 6, is being power-cycled

'Module reset'

Any ideas how to solve this?

PS

I can restore previous IOS version using boot command on standby supervisor.

Alexander,

Console into the supervisor card and reboot.  Post the entire bootup sequence.  I want to see where it's going wrong.

Leo Laohoo,

I cannot reboot active supervisor (downtime is not possible at the moment).

Below you can find the output of standby supervisor upgrade process (after hw-module module 6 reset). It looks like it upgraded to SXI12 normally but something wrong with active supervisor.

I have found the error description. But I don't know how to fix it.

Error Message   %PFREDUN-3-CCMODE_MISMATCH: Standby Supervisor cannot support

Configured Card Mode [chars]([hex]) due to [chars](enf mask [hex], cap mask [hex],

msg ver [hex])!

Explanation   The active supervisor engine is in user-configured mode (for example, DFC-only mode). The active supervisor engine attempts to bring the standby supervisor engine on line, but incompatible software on the standby cannot support this mode The active keeps the standby in ROMMON mode.

Recommended Action   Remove the user-configured mode on the active supervisor engine so that the active can bring the standby on line.

Feb 21 04:23:05.902: %PFREDUN-SP-3-CCMODE_MISMATCH: Standby Supervisor cannot support Configured Card Mode DFC-ONLY(0x1) due to Redundancy mode RPR(enf mask 0x1, cap mask 0x1, msg ver 0x1)!

Basically, this means that the Supervisor card is running one IOS version and the standby card is running a different IOS version.  Because of the incompatibility, the standby supervisor card will be put in ROMmon until it can boot up the same IOS version.
