Hi All,

Very new to Cisco and absolutely stumped.

I have a spare Cisco 857w that I am playing around with to learn.

I managed to reset it to default, upgrade the ios to 12.4

However for the llife of me I cannot ping this device.

I have run the command:

conf t

interface vlan 1

ip address 192.168.1.40 255.255.255.0

no shut

wr mem

I still cannot ping though.

I have read and read things online. It appears as though I have to assign an ip address to Fast Ethernet 0 via the vlan somehow. I just have no idea how to do it.

Any advice on how to get an ip address that i can ping would be great

Thanks

Hi,

On the small router, port fa0/0 is in routing mode most of the time. Port 0/1 to 0/4 are in switching mode. You have configure the vlan interface, you should be connected to one of the later ports. If you want to configure fa0/0, you probably need to do it on the interface directly.
