Cisco Catalyst 2924 XL Fiber Connection

Hello all,

I am one of the IT guys for my unit and have never once worked with fiber optical connections. We had a long stretch that needed to be ran with fiber in order to get them connected so we did but have had no success. We are using (2) Cisco Catalyst 2924 XL Series switches along with working media converters and patch fibers at each end.

I don't know much about configuring switches and spent a good amount of time reading the Guide for that series with no luck on figuring it out. I have confirmed in dir flash that it is a blank config. Is there something in particular I need to setup before the switches can pass traffic?

Hello,

I hope this information will help.

This procedure assumes that the candidate switch has connectivity to the command switch through the same VLAN and is in the same management VLAN. For more information, see the "CLI Procedure for Assigning Static-Access Ports to a VLAN" section, "CLI Procedure for Assigning Ports for Multi-VLAN Membership" section, and "CLI Procedure for Configuring the Management VLAN Interface through a Console Connection" section.

Step 1 Enter global configuration mode.

configure terminal

Step 2 Enable the command switch and name the cluster (up to 31 characters).

cluster enable name

Step 3 Return to privileged EXEC mode.

end

Step 4 Display a list of candidates.

show cluster candidates

Step 5 Display a list of current cluster members.

show cluster members

Step 6 Enter global configuration mode.

configure terminal

Step 7 Add candidates to the cluster.

Assign a unique number from 1 to 15 for n. Do not use any switch number (SN) that appears in the show cluster members display. Enter the candidate switch MAC address, which can be obtained from the show cluster candidates display.

cluster member n mac-address hw-addr password password

Step 8 Return to privileged EXEC mode.

end

Step 9 Display the status of the cluster.

show cluster members

Hi Josh,

For fiber, make sure you have the correct cable for the distances       involved and the type of fiber ports that are used. The two options are       singlemode fiber (SMF) or multimode fiber (MMF). Make sure the ports on the       devices that are connected together are both SMF, or both are MMF ports.

For fiber connections, make sure the transmit lead of one port is           connected to the receive lead of the other port. Connections for           transmit-to-transmit and receive-to-receive do not work.

Command is same to enable the fiber interface in cisco switch as if like ethernet port.

Hope that helps out  your query !!

Regards

Ganesh.H
