Cisco Catalyst 2960S-48FPS-L connected via fiber to Allied Telesis AT-9924SP

Hello,

I want to connect a Catalyst 2960s-48FPS-L switch via SFP trancievers to an AT-9924SP switch. I have a Cisco GLC-FE-100FX tranciever in the Cisco and an  AT-SPFX/2 100FX tranciever in the Allied Telesis.

Here is my problem:

RTS-SW4A-01#show int gi 1/0/52

GigabitEthernet1/0/52 is up, line protocol is up (connected)

Hardware is Gigabit Ethernet, address is **omitted**

MTU 1500 bytes, BW 100000 Kbit, DLY 100 usec,

     reliability 255/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255

  Encapsulation ARPA, loopback not set

  Keepalive not set

Full-duplex, 100Mb/s, link type is auto, media type is 100BaseFX-FE SFP

input flow-control is off, output flow-control is unsupported

ARP type: ARPA, ARP Timeout 04:00:00

Last input never, output 00:00:10, output hang never

Last clearing of "show interface" counters never

Input queue: 0/75/0/0 (size/max/drops/flushes); Total output drops: 0

  Queueing strategy: fifo

  Output queue: 0/40 (size/max)

  5 minute input rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec

  5 minute output rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec

0 packets input, 0 bytes, 0 no buffer

     Received 0 broadcasts (0 multicasts)

     0 runts, 0 giants, 0 throttles

     0 input errors, 0 CRC, 0 frame, 0 overrun, 0 ignored

     0 watchdog, 0 multicast, 0 pause input

0 input packets with dribble condition detected

     634 packets output, 68098 bytes, 0 underruns

0 output errors, 0 collisions, 1 interface resets

     0 babbles, 0 late collision, 0 deferred

0 lost carrier, 0 no carrier, 0 PAUSE output

0 output buffer failures, 0 output buffers swapped out

They don't talk. There are no input packets only output. So the Cisco is sending but not  getting any replies. If I use an eithernt cable I can talk to the network just fine(through a different switch because the AT in question is fiber only).

Any ideas on what to try? any help would be appreciated!

Thanks

Fibre optic cable is fine because you get "up/up".  No input "Last input never, output 00:00:10, output hang never" so which means that the Allied Tele is not talking.  What config do you have on the SFP port of the 2960S?

Thanks for the response. Here is what i have on the SFP for the 2960S:

interface GigabitEthernet1/0/52

switchport trunk allowed vlan 1,7-10

switchport mode trunk

duplex full

ip dhcp snooping trust

end

Sorry but I'm no expert with the Allied but do the Allied support ISL Trunking?  If not, then you need to add "switchport trunk encap dot".

duplex full

I don't think you need this.

No, ISL trunking is Cisco specific protocol, but no I'm pretty sure the ATs don't support it.

The "switchport trunk encap dot" command doesn't work on the SFP port. I think the encap is just 802.1q and can't be changed on this switch. Unless i'm missing something????

If I remove the duplex full command the port on the 2960s the LED starts flashing amber, sets itself to half duplex and starts kicking out errors. - We do need it.

Thanks

Sorry.  My fault.  Didn't realize you have the 2960S.  You don't need that command then.

If I remove the duplex full command the port on the 2960s the LED starts flashing amber, sets itself to half duplex and starts kicking out errors. - We do need it.

How about this, change the port to a switchport and see if you can get traffic through.  Maybe the Allied T doesn't do or isn't configured for dot1Q trunking.

David,

I work at Allied Telesis, and I have my CCNP, so I might be able to help.  Looking over the informaiton you have provided so far, there could be a few issues going on:

1. Some older versions of the 9924 do not support 100 Mbps fiber SFP modules.

2. On the 9924's that do support 100 Mbps fiber SFPs, you need to be running software version 2.8.1-03 or later.

3. There could be a configuration issue between the two switches.  I see that on the 2960 you have the port set up as a trunk port with vlans 1 and 7-10 tagged.  The 9924 would also need to have the same configuration.  Regarding leolaohoo's last comment, the 9924 will do 802.1q, but not ISL as this is Cisco proprietary.  However, just like Cisco switches, the 9924 by default, will have all switch ports as untagged members of vlan 1 until configured otherwise.

4. There could be an autonegotion issue between the two SFP modules.

5. There could be a compatibility issue between the Cisco SFP module and the Allied Telesis SFP module.

I can help you rule out most of these issues, but I will need a little more information from you.  If you can provide the informaiton below, we might be able to get this working:

- Status of the link light on the 9924 port connected to the 2960?

- The outputs from the follow commands on the 9924:

show system

show config dynamic

show switch port=X (where X is the port on the 9924 connect to the 2960)

- The hardware serial number from the 9924 (this can be located on a sticker on the bottom or back of the switch)

David,

Your hardware and software are both compatible with 100 Mbps SFP modules, so far so good.  Does the 2960 have an IP address, if so, which vlan is the IP address assigned to?  It may be beneficial if I can see the config from the 2906.  I noticed that you have a few configuration mismatches between the two switches:

9924 port 8: vlans 7-12 tagged

                  vlan 1 untagged

however, on the 2960, you have:

ge1/0/52: vlans 1,7-10 tagged

Can you ping from switch to switch, if so, what IP addresses are you using to ping?

To ensure traffic is ingressing and egressing from the 9924, you can look at the port counters.  First, reset the port counters with the command "reset switch port=8 count".  Try and send some traffic from the 2960 through the 9924, then look at the port counters to see if they are incrementing "show switch port=8 count".  If you want to send me the config from the 2960 and the outputs from the commands above, I'll take a look.

Ryan,

I change the 2960s  to untag vlan 1. When the fiber is connected the couters on the 9924sp increase, both tranmit and receive. The 2960s however only increases it's output packets. Here are the output captures:

Re: Cisco Catalyst 2960S-48FPS-L connected via fiber to Allied T

Check you GBICS (SFPs). You might also verify your fiber has light through both strands. If you have a GBIC mismatch or bad fiber it can cause it to transmit and not receive or vise versa.

Thanks for the response. The fiber cable works just fine when connect to another Allied Telesis switch. So the cable is good. A transciever mismatch I suppose is still possible. But before I tried the 100BaseFX-FE SFP I tried a GLC-SX-MM=1000BASE-SX transciever. The interface did not ever light up.

You should also try using the same Cisco brand GBIC in both switches.

I don't think the Allied Telesis would take a cisco transciever, would it?

Re: Cisco Catalyst 2960S-48FPS-L connected via fiber to Allied T

Cisco's GBICS are not completely proprietary. I have used them in a Cisco to HP and Cisco to Dell environment with no issues at all so you might give it a shot if all else fails.

Just make sure they are the same kind i.e GLC-LH-SM 1310nm etc..

It works!!!!!!! It's ALIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE!!!!!!!  Finally! So I wanted to test the tranciever in other ports on the 2960s and in another switch as Jimmysands recommended. I moved the transciever to port gi 51 on the 2960s and rebooted the 9924s. Boom! it started receiving input packets immediately. Then after setting the proper native vlan I could then talk to the whole network and internet from the switch. I'm actually updating this discussion thorugh the fiber connection in question.

Thanks everyone for the ideas and the help. I really appreciate it.
