Cisco`s limited POE power


Using Avaya phones, each phone requires 15.4Watt of power, so using a 2960 there is no where near enough power for 48 phones, let alone 24. Is there a better model with more POE overall power?

Is there a way to boost the power of current models ?

"Limited" PoE power? 15,4 W is the 802.3af standard max, and if you have a swtich with sufficient size Power Supply, then you can drive that. For a Cat2960 with a 370W PSU you will be able to run PoE to 24 ports.

Yes, if you go to some 3560/3560E or 3750/3750E switches, or modular switches like Cat4500 / 6500, then you will be able to have more power options. But they cost more than a Cat2960.

Can I limit the power avialable per port on a 2960-pst? I.E.: limit power comsumation to 7watt per port so that 48ports can use poe at 7watts

Yes you can-

You can limit the maximum power available on a PoE port, however if the attached 802.3af device requires more power than the maximum then it won't power up and the port will error disable. It sounds like your Avaya IP Phones are either Class 0 or Class 4 devices and need 15.4 Watts. If you restrict the ports then the phones probably won't power up.
