Cisco VSS

Hello All,

I am configuring VSS between two 4500x switches, and am having difficulty. I followed the below insturctions from cisco's site, however I both times I've tried this, the standby switch continues to reboot right when it finishes booting. The below link was what I used to setup the VSS, the config begins below "Converting to a VSS".

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst4500/15.1.2/XE_340/configuration/guide/vss.html#wp1062785

Below are the logs I get from the standby switch right before it reboots. The primary switch says it connects to it's peer, then about a second later it disconnects.

I suspect that my be the issue. Do you have any Cisco GBICs you can try it with ?

Right before the failure there are transceiver error messages for two ports. Are you using Cisco supported transceivers and could these ports be the two ports used in the VSL link ?

If so that may be your problem.

Jon

Hi John,

Thanks for the quick response. You are correct I am not using Cisco SFPs. I am using a third party brand. For VSS to work do I need to have Cisco transceivers?

Hi,

Actually the switch is not recognising your GBIC and the link between the two chassis is going down which leads to VSS failure.

Thanks

John

Hey Jon,

The Cisco GBICs resolved the issue. Thanks again!.
