Hi all,
I've hunted high and low and cannot seem to be able to enable shaping, bandwidth or priority under a class in a policy-map on a Cisco WS-C4948.
All documentation I have read on this switch on the Cisco website says that all these commands are possible.
Switch# configure terminal
Switch(config)# policy-map policy1
Switch(config-pmap)# class class1
Switch(config-pmap-c)# shape average 256000
When I try to replicate I get:
Switch# configure terminal
Switch(config)# policy-map policy1
Switch(config-pmap)# class class1
Switch(config-pmap)# ?
Policy-map class configuration commands:
dbl Dynamic buffer limiting
exit Exit from QoS class action configuration mode
netflow-sampler NetFlow action
no Negate or set default values of a command
police Police traffic matching current class
service-policy Configure QoS Service Policy
set Set QoS values
trust Set trust value for the class
<cr>
Am I missing a global command to enable shaping?
Thanks guys.

Hi,
I see that when you enter the command class class1 it is no entering into the policy-map class configuration mode since you should see something like this:
Switch(config-pmap-c)#
Your output shows:
Switch(config-pmap)#
Which means that you are not into the policy-map class configuration mode.
Have you already created the class1? Because if you don't create the class before going into the police map then you will face this issue.
Hope this helps.

Hi Leo,
Thanks for that.
Yes, there is a class1. Appologies must be a miss copy, see below:
class-map match-all class1
match ip dscp ef
!
switch(config)#policy-map policy1
switch(config-pmap)# class class1
switch(config-pmap-c)#?
Policy-map class configuration commands:
dbl Dynamic buffer limiting
exit Exit from QoS class action configuration mode
netflow-sampler NetFlow action
no Negate or set default values of a command
police Police traffic matching current class
service-policy Configure QoS Service Policy
set Set QoS values
trust Set trust value for the class
Thanks

Do you actually have ip routing turned on for the switch ? Ip routing must be turned on to set certain COS features...

Hi Glen,
Thanks for your reply.
Interestingly when I run the command 'ip routing' globally, it dosen't appear in the show running config.
This switch is however correctly participating in BGP so routing is working.
Cheers

I think the original 4948s are basically the equivalents of the supV. If I'm correct, you'll not find sup6 like QoS (from your OP reference link) on it.

Hi Leo,
Any ideas?

Hi Paul,
It is really odd that the shaping option is not available, since according to the configuration guide it should be there, I would say this may be a limitation for this platform. I myself tested on a same platform and got the same results there is no shaping option under the class map. However I see this on the configuration guide:
Catalyst 4900M, Catalyst 4948E, Supervisor Engine 6-E, and Supervisor Engine 6L-E support a range of 32 kbps to 10 gbps for shaping, with a precision of approximately with a precision of approximately +/- 0.75 percent.
You may want to open a TAC case to further investigate this issue and confirm that this is a hardware limitation.

Hi Paul,
After further research, On 4948 platform, traffic shaping is not available with the policy maps.
It is not possible to use the shape command in policy-map. The QOS on the switch is performed in hardware so there are platform limitations because of which certain commands are not supported. Class based traffic shaping is available on next generation catalysts equipped with a Sup6-E engine or higher like Sup7-E.
Hope this helps.

Hi Leo,
Thanks for that!
Interesting, and disapointing from Cisco.
They should really provide another config guide for 4948, if it isn't the same as the Sup6 & Sup7.
Cheers
