Conclusion regarding Loop Reply Receipt frames

Hi all.

Can someone please clarify some of my questions from the following statement. "The Ethernet hardware sends this packet onto the Ethernet wire and then immediately receives this packet back again". Here is the URL.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk827/tk369/technologies_tech_note09186a008048cffc.shtml#t3

1.) Is the frame really sent down the wire? From the following document (http://www.groupstudy.com/archives/cisco/200607/msg00574.html) it seems that the frame is being looped back immediately to the sending interface.

2.) If the frame is not being sent down the wire, how come it can be captured by Wireshark such as the following pic?

Untitled.png

3.) If the frame is sent down the wire, how does it come back to the sending interface? Is it received by the other end and being sent back?

I have tried to dig deep regarding this matter and found a thread where in Giuseppe and Peter have differing conclusions. Here it is.

Can someone straighten things out?

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
