Hi guys,
I need to confirm something here regarding the configuration of subinterfaces on a Cisco 2621 router, ISO version 12.3 (26). When I attempt to configure subinterfaces I get an "Invalid Input Detected" message when attempting to configure the dot1q encapsulation for a configured VLAN 10 on one of my switches. Example: (I am in the router here, of course.)
Home(config)#int fa0/1.10
Home(config-subif)#encapsulation dot1q 10
^
% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.
Home(config-subif)#
I have done this several times in class and have no problem with this in Packet Tracer, so I am wondering if there is an issue with the ISO version on the router that is giving me problems?
Thanks,
Steve

Steve,
can you post the sho version from your router.
I have feeling your feature set does not support 802.1Q trunking

Hi Steve,
Alex is right.
Your IOS might not support encapsulation command at all. I have just tested it on c2600-i-mz.123-26.

Hi Jan,
Well, you do have a guest-level CCO account, otherwise you would not be able to post here on CSC and be awarded with your new shiny bronze star! By the way, congratulations! You absolutely deserved that. Thanks for joining the CSC and please keep up the good work you're doing!
So try out that link. And more: There is a Cisco Feature Navigator tool at http://cisco.com/go/fn - also worthy of trying.
Best regards,
Peter

Hi Peter,
I thought CCO account is only for customers. Well I tried it out but i keep getting "Forbidden File or Application" although I am logged in. The second link works.
Peter, thank you very much!!!

Hey Jan,
I just posted the show ver for Alex just in case.
I am having a sinking suspicion it is the IOS version, (this is the way my week's been going.) In any case, can you still download a newer version of the IOS for the 2621 router? Strange as it may sound, I have two different vlans I would like to set up at home. I have one of my switches alread set up with port ranges, security and such, sooo.....
In any case, thanks to all who have lent me their knowledge here. I am in the last phase of my CCNA training at college and I guess I am one of the luckier students. I built a lab at home so I can suffer through and experience these real world unexpected scenarios.
Regards all,
Steve

Steve,
Your IOS is System image file is "flash:c2600-i-mz.123-26.bin"
This is the IP BASE version
You need IP-PLUS c2600-is-mz.123-26.bin to run 802.1Q trunking features

Steve,
As Alex said - your suspicion is in place. Your IOS does not support features that you want to implement - you have to replace it.
Good luck in your CCNA training!!!
Best regards,
Jan
