Connectivity btw 6506 and 4507

Hi,

   I have a core (Two number 6506) and distribution (one number 4507) architecture. Connectivity between 6506 and 4507 will be L3 connectivity with EIGRP.For high availbilty 4507 will be running with two number SUP. My query are

1) Each 6506 will be connected to 4507  with two cables .

one cable will be going to 4507's Active SUP and other cable  to Standby SUP. Right ?

2) What will be the IP Addressing on both 6506 and 4507 . will it be like following

6506-1  GigE 6/1 X.X.X.1       4507-Active-SUP GigE1/1  X.X.X.2

6506-1  GigE 6/2 ?.?.?.?       4507-Standby-SUP GigE2/1 ?.?.?.?

?.?.?.? = I am not sure what will be the IP addressing

Hi Neo,

Since you have 2 sups in your 4507, if you uplink one from each sup to each 6500, only the active sup will be forwarding and not the stand-by unless you create on etherchannel from the 4500 to the 6500s, but in that case the 6500s need be in VSS.

Hi Neo,

I am not clear about your setup. Please can you clarify the following points.

I assume that you have WS-X4013+ or WS-X4515 supervisor engines  - when two of these Supervisors are installed only the Gig1/1 and Gig2/1 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces are available - Gig1/2 and Gig2/2 uplink ports are unavailable. Please confirm that this is your setup.

You mention that you have two 6506 core switches but the 4507R only connects to one of them using Gig1/1 and Gig2/1 - please confirm that this is the case (in most designs distribution switches would have uplinks to both core switches).

If the setup is as described then the simplest solution would be to configure a Layer 3 EtherChannel and apply the X.X.X.2 IP address to to Port-Channel interface.

                AFAIK , which ever Module is active ports are active on that module.

I am confused in whether can i do IP addressing config on ports which are on standby module ?

My distribution switch 4507 is getting connected to both Core-6500 switches.

HI Neo,

Apologies for taking a while to respond.

When two Supervisors are installed generally some  ports on both Supervisors are available and some may be disabled.

For instance when you use the WS-X4013+ and WS-X4515 supervisor engines in RPR or SSO mode the Gig1/1 and Gig2/1 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces are available, but the Gig1/2 and Gig2/2 uplink ports are unavailable.
