in a vlan generally we go for the first ip as the gateway for ex

172.16.0.0 - network, gateway will be 172.16.0.1 can we have 172.16.0.254 as the gateway

the reason is we have a vlan 172.21.0.0 with 172.21.0.1 gateway we want to subnet it but one of the server ip address is 172.21.1.1 and we dont want to change server ip address so if we create a vlan 172.21.1.0/24 the gateway will be 172.21.1.1 but we have a server with ip address so we are trying to keep the gateway as 172.21.1.254..i have tried yet so please let me know it is possible or not

You can certainly have 172.16.0.254 as the default gateway. The default gateway IP is chosen per your convenience.

Hi karthik,

You can use 172.21.1.254 as default gateway for the vlan, As genral practice for designing in network .1 ip is selected as vip or gateway for vlans.
