DHCP snooping clients not getting IP address

Hi,

I have got two access switches where almost 50 PCs connected. I have enabled DHCP snooping on those switches.

Once I enabled DHCP snooping on those switches existing clients works fine but If I plug a new device it is unable to get an IP Address assigned.

I have enabled IP DHCP snooping, IP DHCP snooping vlan 3 (Data VLAN) where clients and DHCP server resides.

I have also enabled DHCP snoop trust option on the trunk interfaces and DHCP snoop with rate limit of 3 is applied on all client intefaces.

The DHCP server resides on VLAN 3 (same as the clients) but on the other switch where I haven't enabled DHCP snooping yet.

While I try to debug, I get following messgaes on switch... (client trying to get Ip has the mac address sa: 0024.e8b4.ec05 )

Hi Cadet,

It resolved the issue straight away, thanks.

Sorry Alain, I got you wrongly mentioned in my reply.

Hi Alain,

I think I declared the victory too soon, I have got another two people this morning comming back from their holidays face the issue getting IP adress again when dhcp snooping was enabled, existing users are all fine.

Any further debugging you suggest?

Thanks,

Mnaish.

Hi,

if on clients already in the binding state you do a ipconfig/release then ipconfig/renew, are they also not getting an ip address?

Also provide output of sh ip dhcp snooping

Regards.

Alain

No, the client is not in binding state, as I mentioned in my initial question, only people come back after their holidays are facing this issue. I have disabled dhcp snooping as users were unable to get IP address.

But this is what I saw on dhcp snoop debug for that perticular clinet...(when he was trying to acquire IP address)

Hi,

yes it was the initial debug you provided but if you have clients working ok, what if you release and renew the ip address is it the same result and debug?

Can you also provide  sh ip dhcp snooping output as requested

Regards.

Alain

Don't forget to rate helpful posts.

ok, what I did is have a client connected when dhcp snooping was not enabled, the client got IP address. Then I enabled dhcp snooping and did release renew and client didn't get ip address.

so here is the output...

I have got a client just got ip address and then dhcp snooping just enabled on the switch and then took the output of the commands you have asked..

Now I did release and renew on client and the output of the debug is as under..The client I am talking about is connected on the switch port Fa0/22.

Hi,

you are  receiving packets on the the link going to the server but it is ignored by the switch for some reasons

041901: Nov  9 09:43:34.953 UTC: DHCP_SNOOPING: invalid DHCP options - unable to parse

Can you debug ip dhcp server packets on the DHCP server and mirror traffic ingress on this trunk and save as pcap and post  both of them here.

Regards.

Hi Alain, I have go Window Server being used as DHCP server so I guess I would not be able to run "debug ip dhcp server packets"

I also thought it is worthwhile mentioning few more info. that might help...

We use additional bit of information in DHCP scope as under as we use Cisco Wireless Controller in our lan and we want Wireless controller boot from it..

I am letting you know as I wonder if that is what is adding complexicity?  (please find extract of DHCP scope options)

Hi,

If Windows server then effectively disabling option 82 was surely not the solution to the problem.

I'll take a look and think it over maybe it is the problem but I can't tell for sure.

Can you mirror the traffic ingress/egress on the link to DHCP server and post the pcap file

Regards.

Hi Bekzod,

Perhaps it would be better for you to open a new thread - this one is years old, extending it with new discussion will just decrease its overall readability, and your issue may be different.

One comment, though: According to your show ip dhcp snooping command output, your switch does not even run DHCP Snooping (see the line above saying that the switch DHCP snooping is disabled). So if, in this configuration, your clients are not getting any DHCP assignments then the issue is most probably elsewhere.

Best regards,
Peter

no im sorry, i have disabled dhcp snooping because of this issue this is working office they need internet
