Hi We have Two Core switches 6500 non enhanced and 6509-E

where 6500(Non enhanced) switch is running as Primary HSRP and 6509E is secondary.

We are planning to replace the 6500 non enhanced with 6509-E switch and the management are looking for the basic difference/advantages between them to buy. below are the platform and Os Version currently running.

Could you please help me with more than 10-15 advantages/differences.

COre1:
Hardware Platform: 6500 (Non-Enhanced) Hybrid-Mode

SUPII Cat OS Version: 7.6(16)

MSFC2 IOS Version: Version 12.1(11r)E1, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

Core2:

Hardware Platform: 6509-E (Enhanced)

IOS Version: Version 12.2(18)SXF12a Release Software (fc1)

Thanks,

You don't want much then

There really aren't 10 - 15 advantages. The main ones are -

1) most importantly the non E chassis is now not supported ie. it has gone past EoS/EoL

2) you can power more devices with the E chassis in terms of PoE. May or may not be an issue for you

3) the 68xx cards and later require an E chassis

4) if you decide to upgrade the supervisors at a later date the sup2T only works with the E chassis

that's about it. Obviously you could move to native IOS as you are currently running hybrid but you could do that anyway ie. you don't need the E chassis for this.

Jon has hit all the highlights.  To expand a little on what Jon has already noted.

On power, the non-E chassis is limited to 6k(?) powersupplies  The E chassis can take the later, bigger, power supplies.  The need for additional power isn't usually too much of a problem unless you're doing PoE.  (The E chassis increased the capacity of its power bus.)

The E chassis also supports 80 Gb per slot, including all the slots on the 6513-E.  However, at the moment, only the sup2T takes advantage of this.  (The sup2T can also have CEF720 [40 Gb] cards in all the slots of a 6513-E.)

To the original poster, if you're looking to purchase a new chassis, you might also want to look at the 6807.  (I.e. consider any 6500-E chassis EoL.)

hi,

Thanks for the inputs , this is really helpfull. I have few other things to be known on this.

6509-E basic difference between 6500 (Non E)

Throughput support default? can we extend this ?

supports GB per Slot?

Can we install WISM card ? is 6500(Non-E) doesnt support ?

Comes with SUP 720 by default ? Can we have any other Sup installed ?

Thanks,

Hi Srikanth,

The main difference betwen the 6509-E and non E is 6700 series line cards are not supported on the non-E and the SUP 2T is also not supported on the non-E chassis. Sup 2T will only be supported by E chassis.

You can have any other Sup like Sup32, Sup2 and others on both E and non-E.

Your maximum per slot throughput is 80G in 1 direction or 160 for both directions for the E-Series chassis. For the non-E chassis it's 40G in each direction.

As for as WISM is concerned, check this out:

The Chassis on which the Cisco WiSM is installed needs a Supervisor 720 module.

This table shows the supported slots for the Cisco WiSM:

Slot6503-E6504-E650665096513
1-3XXXX
4 XXX
5-6 XX
7-8 X
9 XX
10-13 X

Thanks

Hi Ankur

The main difference betwen the 6509-E and non E is 6700 series line cards are not supported on the non-E

not sure about this. The WS-X6748 for example  is supported in non E chassis and some of the later 67xx 10Gbps cards are also supported if you use a fan tray 2.

Unless the data sheets are wrong.

Jon

Jon,

Some of them are indeed not supported in couple of non-E chassis, like 6503. Not too sure about the bigger chassis as the data sheet do show that 6700s are supported.

Thanks

Ankur
