Hello Bala,

MSFC is a daughter card that provides routing services when installed on a C6500 supervisor.

Last generations of supervisors Sup720 are usually shipped with an MSFC3.

in old times MSFC could be added in a second time to make the device a multilayer switch.

First generation routing engine for C6000 was MSM that is a standalone linecard using a slot on the chassis.

the same should be true of RSM that should be a routing engine for C5500 series using a slot.

the C5500 equivalent of an MSFC should be named RSFC and should be a daughter card installed on supervisor.

Hope to help

Giuseppe

Hi Giuseppe,

Thanks for your reply, so

MSFC - Layer 3 Switching

RSM - Routing Module for C5K series switches.

is my assumption correct.

Thanks,

Bala.

Hello Bala,

also RSM can provide multilayer switching but in a C5500.

the MSFC is used on a C6500.

Hope to help

Giuseppe

Thats about it for differences , msfc high speed layer 3 board attached to the supervisor while a RSM on a 5500 was a standalone card usually in slot 2 . Layer 3 fast switching was handled and configured differently on the 5500's also .
