Difrrence between diffrent types STP protocols.

Hi,

I have smal query that what is the diffrence between mentioned protocols

CST,STP,RSTP,PVST,PVST+,RPVST,RPVST+

1)on above mentioned protocol which one is cisco Proprietary protocol

2) If i enable RPVST in my core swtcihes(Cisco)..Which spanning tree need to enable in non cisco products(Access switches)..

Re: Difrrence between diffrent types STP protocols.

Hello Sateesh,

1)

CST = IEEE STP 802.1D single instance

STP generic can be IEEE, IBM or DEC

RSTP = 802.1W Rapid STP

PVST = cisco prop

PVST+= cisco propr. one STP instance for each Vlan

RPVST = cisco propr. one Rapid STP instance for each Vlan

MST = 802.1S multi instance STP uses a Rapid STP instance for each configured group of Vlans that share the same topology

2)

You have two options:

use PVST+ on core switches and CST on access switches

or

use MST on core switches and access switches if all of them support it

Hope to help

Just to add to Giuseppe's excellent post

PVST = Cisco proprietary. One STP instance per vlan. Works with ISL trunks.

PVST+ = Cisco proprietary. One STP instance per vlan. Works with 802.1q trunks.

Re: Difrrence between diffrent types STP protocols.

Hello Sateesh,

I thought I had already answered in my first post.

However:

because RPVST is Cisco proprietary on the Nortel switches you can probably run only the old 8021.D CST.

To take advantage of 802.1W Rapid spanning tree you should use MST 802.1S on both Cisco switches and Nortel switches.

As a reference you can use the following document:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst6500/ios/12.2SX/configuration/guide/spantree.html

Hope to help

Re: Difrrence between diffrent types STP protocols.

Hi, Depending on the Nortel switch, age etc, the newer ones support 802.1w, the older ones support 802.1d.

With Nortel, by default there is one single spanning tree instance for all vlan, You can create another instance and then assign vlans to it, this is for both STP and RSTP.
