Dot1q trunk between 6500 and 4948 issues

fibernet570
Level 1
Level 1

I'm having some trouble with establishing a trunk port between a Cisco 6513 and Cisco 4948.

Here is the config:

Cisco 6513

int gig 8/1

switchport

switchport encap dot1q

switchport mode trunk

switchport trunk allowed vlan 1

speed noneg

no shut

int vlan 1

description Mgmt VLAN

ip address 10.10.10.1 255.255.255.0

no shut

Cisco 4948

gig 1/48

switchport

switchport encap dot1q

switchport mode trunk

switchport  trunk allowed vlan 1

speed noneg

no shut

int vlan 1

description Mgmt VLAN

ip address  10.10.10.2 255.255.255.0

no shut

Status:

1- Both Gige's are up/up

2- But can't ping each other

Cards on Cisco 6513:

  slot:7    2  Supervisor Engine 720 (Active)         WS-SUP720-3B
  Slot:8    2  Supervisor Engine 720 (Hot)            WS-SUP720-3B

I have Gig7/1 on Cisco 6513 and Gi1/47 on the Cisco 4948 up, as a routed port.  I hate to touch these ports or else I loose connectivity to the Cisco 4948.

Manny,

Can you provide from both 6513 and 4948 switches the  output of  " show int gig8/1  switchport " and "show int gig1/48  switchport" , also output of "show interface gig8/1 trunk" ,  show int gig1/48 trunk  from the 4948 .

you may need to   use " switchport  trunk encap dot1q"  in the interfaces  , unless switchport encap dot1q  syntax is a typo or command was introduce in a ios version Im not aware of then is fine,  but  the output  of above interface information  as well as "show vtp status" from each switch would help to understand your l2 topology and  give us some hints on what could be the issue on the interfaces

Regards

Jorge Rodriguez

Hi,

Can I ask you something ? Isnt is that the port are working as switchports ( trunk mode ) and you are assigning Ip address on that switchport and trying to ping them. I think ones the port is in switching mode the ip address is assigned to the SVI and then you can access the switch using that SVI ip address. It is always the routed port that are assigned the ip address.

Let me know if my understanding of switchports and routed ports are wrong !! plz

Thanks

Manish

sorry ! misread it the first time , drunk i believe ... did not see the interface vlan config. can you post

1> sh ip route

2> sh spanning tree

3> Vlan database

Thanks

Manish

Something is not right.  The 'sh run' shows interface g1/48 as 'shutdown', but the 'sh int g1/48' shows it up/up.

Can you verify that it isn't shutdown.

Can you also post the 'show interface trunk' output ?

I dont have much experience with the Cisco 6515, can Gig8/1 on the Cisco 6515 be on-standby since its the standy card?  Card in slot 7 is active.  I figured Gig8/1 can not be used, but I maybe wrong.
