Re: dynamic / static MAC address

Basically, Dynamic addresses are MAC addresses learnt by the switch during its operation.

Static addresses are MAC addresses entered by the operator and associated with certain interfaces for security reasons.

Here is some more info:

Re: dynamic / static MAC address

thanks. What I am looking for is an explanation of why these multicast addresses show up from a "show mac-address" but no dynamic address appears.

Static Address Table:

Destination Address VLAN Input Port Output Ports

------------------- ---- ---------- -----------------------

0100.5e00.0118 40 Fa0/33 Gi0/1

0100.5e00.013c 40 Fa0/33 Fa0/8 Fa0/41 Gi0/1

0100.5e00.017f 40 Fa0/33 Fa0/11 Fa0/24 Fa0/23 Gi0/1

0100.5e01.0026 40 Fa0/33 Gi0/1

0100.5e7f.fffa 40 Fa0/33 Fa0/11 Fa0/24 Fa0/23 Fa0/39

Fa0/41 Gi0/1

0100.5e7f.fffd 40 Fa0/33 Fa0/11 Fa0/24 Fa0/23 Gi0/1

0100.5e7f.fffe 40 Fa0/33 Gi0/1

Non-static Address Table:

Destination Address Address Type VLAN Destination Port

------------------- ------------ ---- --------------------

0030.4880.d3d8 Dynamic 40 FastEthernet0/45

Static Address Table:

Destination Address VLAN Input Port Output Ports

------------------- ---- ---------- -----------------------

0100.5e00.013c 40 Fa0/45 Fa0/8 Fa0/41 Gi0/1

0100.5e00.017f 40 Fa0/45 Fa0/11 Fa0/24 Fa0/23 Gi0/1

Re: dynamic / static MAC address

What model switch?

Are you running any multicast services on your network?

What is your environment? is this an access/distribution/core switch? what is connected to it?
