EIGRP in the access and distribution

Hi Everyone,

Forgive me if I am totally off on this configuration, but I am looking into EIGRP for use in the distribution and access layers (eventually to the core) with redundant links for high-availability. I am working on setting up a test environment to get a better understanding of how things will work. I know it’s in the early stages and there’s lots of tuning that can be put in place with regards to route summarization etc. This is just to get things setup, and build on that.

Here’s how things are currently setup:

All links between switchs are /30

It seems to be partly working, from the access-2 switch I can ping the vlans on access-1 without issue, there located in the route table all is good. However on access-1 I don’t have any routes to the vlans on access-2.

Also in the distribution switches (dist-1 & dist-2) I only have the routes for the vlans that are attached the access switches as per the show ip route.

Also note:

I can ping from dist-1 to any of the vlans on access-1

I cannot ping from dist-1 to any of the vlans on access-2

I cannot ping from dist-2 to any of the vlans on access-2

I can ping from dist-2 to any of the vlans on access-1

All switches are 3550’s running c3550-ipservicesk9-mz.122-50.SE.bin

Hi Mike,

you should advertise only the loopbac with a 0.0.0.0 wildcard... The network statement should match the /30 with a 0.0.0.3 wildcard and the VLAN with their relative wildcard... for example

router eigrp 1

no auto

network 10.0.40.0 0.0.0.255

that is not enough of course. Since the VLAN serving your final hosts must not speak eigrp, you should apply the passive-interface command to the relative vlans:

router eigrp 1

no auto

network 10.0.40.0 0.0.0.255

passive interface vlan 40 ! assuming 10.0.40.0/24 is the vlan 40

i would remove the stub statement too

Awesome!

Thanks for your help Alessio! I made the changes and everything works as expected. I did some reading and watched some more configuration videos as well. Lots to learn yet, I am sure I'll be back with some more questions in the future.
