Endless 2948G-L3 Boot Loop

Hey,

During the course of some experimentation by a student, the flash on a 2948G was wiped AND a copy of the running config was put in (the name flash:running.backup).

When the Switch tries to boot up now it outputs the following messages (you will be able to see where it starts looping again, i will only put them in twice).

====================================

ROMMON: Cold Reset frame @0x00000000

ROMMON: Reading reset reason register

ROMMON: Valid NVRAM config

System Bootstrap, Version 12.0(7)W5(15a) RELEASE SOFTWARE

ROMMON: Initializing exceptions

ROMMON: Initializing TLB

ROMMON: Initializing cache

ROMMON: Sizing and zeroing main memory ... 64 MBytes

ROMMON: Sizing non-volatile memory ... 128 KBytes

cat2948g platform with 65536 Kbytes of main memory

loadprog: bad file magic number: 0x0

boot: cannot load "bootflash:"

and so on...

As far as i can tell there is no way to break this procedure and enter rommon so i cannot restore the IOS via TFTP.

Any ideas from anyone?

Any suggestions at all would be great

Re: Endless 2948G-L3 Boot Loop

Hi Jenko,

Power off the switch and then power it back again and as soon as you see something on your console hit CTRL + BREAK key and see if you can break it to rommon.

Regards,

Ankur

Re: Endless 2948G-L3 Boot Loop

In addition to ankur's post, if you are able to get to the rommon of the switch please use Xmodem to transfer the proper image back to the switch. Use the link below for the same

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/l3sw/4908g_l3/ios_12/10w518e/config/init_cfg.htm#xtocid2778015

In case if you are unable to break into rommon, I would request to contact TAC and get a hardware replacement.

It looks like i'll have to, i've tried every method to break into rommon unsuccessfully so far.

Re: Endless 2948G-L3 Boot Loop

Hi Jenko ,

If you are not able to enter into rommon mode , better go for RMA of the switch.

Is you enter into rommon mode , try to load the ios with baud rate 57600.

Thanks,

Satish
