all our switches are in vtp transparent mode, do I need to issue the delete flash:vlan.dat to clear the configuration or just erase start?

You havent specified the switch models, but typically you could use the following;

erase nvram to delete all files in nvram.

erase const_nvram to delete vlan database

erase startup-config to delete startup config

If so, please rate this post.

Thanks

Yes, delete vlan.dat.

Actually, you must specify the switch because it varies.

To erase the vlan.dat file on the 6500/6000 switches, issue the erase const_nvram: command. On the 4500/4000 switches, issue the erase cat4000_flash: command. On the fixed configuration switches, issue the delete flash:vlan.dat command.

The switches in question are 3750 and 3560 so I am guessing the delete flash:vlan.dat is required.

correct.
