Etherchannel group limitation of cisco stacks

Hello,

I looked now some time around, but unfortunately I wasn't able to figure out what limitations regarding etherchannels I have with a Cisco switch stack.

For one of our projects I plan to build the platform based on microblades. In sum I plan to stack 4 switches (48 ports) for the internal switching layer and will need to configure around 70 etherchannel groups. I found the following values on the Cisco homepage, but I am not sure if those values apply per switch or stack

WS-C2960X-48TD-L           LAN Base     24 Etherchannel groups

WS-C2960XR-48TD-I         IP Lite           48 Etherchannel groups

Does somebody know how many Etherchannel groups I can configure per stack. Most of micro blade will have 2 or 4 network cables which I want to split over the switches for redundancy purposes.

I am also open to discuss, if somebody has a better idea.

Thanks for your support

Daniel

Etherchannel group limitation of cisco stacks

Daniel

For the 2960X

From the config guide

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst2960x/software/15-0_2_EX/layer2/configuration_guide/b_lay2_152ex_2960-x_cg/b_lay2_152ex_2960-x_cg_chapter_010.html#con_1275881

Do not try to configure more than 24 EtherChannels on the switch or switch stack.

So it is 24 per stack

For the 2960XR

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst2960xr/software/15-0_2_EX1/layer2/configuration_guide/b_lay2_152ex1_2960-xr_cg/b_lay2_152ex1_2960-xr_cg_chapter_0101.html#con_1275881

Do not try to configure more than 24 EtherChannels on the switch or switch stack.

So it is 24 per stack

Etherchannel group limitation of cisco stacks

Hi Alex,

thanks for the links. According to below link the 2960XR can handle 48 etherchannels which is still not enough for the solution I plan (table 2):

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/switches/catalyst-2960-x-series-switches/qa_c67-728348.html

I want to keep this solution as simple as possible and therefore I don't want to use different stacks. Any other idea how to build it up with Cisco?

3750x seems to have a limitation of 48 etherchannels.

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst3750x_3560x/software/release/12-2_53_se/configuration/guide/3750xscg/swethchl.html#wp1275881

Otherwise it seems that I have to use Dell, according to their documentation they support 128 groups per stack.

Thx,

Daniel

Etherchannel group limitation of cisco stacks

Daniel,

On the smaller type switches even moving up to the top of the range 4500X you are linited to 64 etherchannels

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst4500/XE3-5-0E/15-21E/configuration/guide/config/channel.html#wp1078351

A 6500 can be up to 128 channels but I dont think the costs of you project would warrant this if you are looking at the smaller size switches

Etherchannel group limitation of cisco stacks

Seems that I have to look for something else or split it up into different stacks.

Thanks for the support Alex!

Cheers,

Daniel
