Hi,

If port-channel is shutdown all the member ports also needs to be shutdown. ?

In this scenario member ports should send LACPDU's or shouldn't ?

Thanks & Regards,

Muniyappan S.

Muniyappan,

Yes otherwise the protocol of Port-channel would be up.Hence the individual ports would be up thoug hthe port-channel is up.

Port-channel is down(shutdown):

Port-channel 1         unassigned      YES unset  administratively down up

Number of channel-groups in use: 1

Number of aggregators:           1

Group  Port-channel  Protocol    Ports

------+-------------+-----------+----------------------------------------------

1      Po1(SU)           PAgP   Fa0/1(P) Fa0/2(P)

Port-channel and interface shutdown:

Number of channel-groups in use: 1

Number of aggregators:           1

Group  Port-channel  Protocol    Ports

------+-------------+-----------+----------------------------------------------

1      Po1(SD)           PAgP   Fa0/1(D) Fa0/2(D)

If port-channel is shutdown all the member

If you shut down the port-channel, all the members will go into shutdown.

Hi Leo

Just on this topic , say you have 2 member ports with a channel  and you want to maybe disable one of them , would this be possible ?

Yes you could. You could individually shutdown a single port in the port-channel (just make sure you do so on both sides for best practice). You can also configure the "max bundle command" see below:

Router(config)# interface port-channel 2
Router(config-if)# lacp max-bundle 1

This will only allow 1 port to work in the LACP port channel. It will keep the extra link on reserve. If the original link goes down the backup link takes over. However, if you manually shut down the port you would have to manually enable it if the original link failed.
