in an enterprise environment. if I am not bundling multiple ports, what are the benefits to do etherchannel? or is it better not to configure etherchannel until needed? thanks.

if you are not bundling ports then there are really no benefits to etherchannel as that is all etherchannel is really.
I suppose you could set them up with only one port and then there is less work to do if you need to add another link but to be honest i would personally find this more confusing ie. an etherchannel has been set up but only has one member.

Jon,
thanks for your response. I feel the same. there is no need to add overhead and complexity to a config. besides it's pretty easy to create the channel in future demand. However, I have a difficult time convincing one of my co-worker. He kind of make me doubted myself.

I'm with you on this one :-). It just confuses things in my mind.
