ethernet

Hi all

this is a basic question, but what defines ethernet, is it the physical medium, or way the frames are constructed etc, also would a ppp serial link be classed as ethernet as the frames travel through it ?

Re: ethernet

"Ethernet" defines the frame/Encapsulation, and various flavors of Ethernet also describe the appropriate media (10BASE-T, 10BASE-FL, 100BASE-FX, etc)

Re: ethernet

what about the frames over serial links, frame relay etc ? Is serial not classed as ethernet, are would they be HDLC or PPP frames then ?

Re: ethernet

Right.Ethernet specifies the L1 and L2 characteristics including the format of the frame etc.PPP/HDLC/SLIP is another L2 protocol that uses a different hardware.
