Re: Ethernet0 is up, line protocol is down

Is this a switch or a router. What's on the other end of the connection. How did you verify the cable is good. Are you using the right type of cable, crossover/straighthrough etc?

Re: Ethernet0 is up, line protocol is down

Is this a router or a switch? Routers could require a crossover cable to bring the int up.

Re: Ethernet0 is up, line protocol is down

This is a router and I am using a good crossover. Tested by use with another device.

Re: Ethernet0 is up, line protocol is down

Is it connected to a switch or a router. If it's a switch then you need to use a straight-through cable.

Re: Ethernet0 is up, line protocol is down

I assume the router interface is enabled (sorry ;-))? Can you do a hard loopback on both interfaces ?

Re: Ethernet0 is up, line protocol is down

I forgot to state that it is connecting to a pc. I issued the no shutdown command once the ip and subnet were assigned. I will do the lb and post results

Re: Ethernet0 is up, line protocol is down

I entered the command loopback and now

Ethernet0 is up, line protocol is down

still down. If that was not what u meant by hard lb please let me know.

Re: Ethernet0 is up, line protocol is down

Try hard-seting the speed/duplex on the PC's NIC to 10/half... Many newer NICs will not come up if duplex between the network device and PC do not match.

10/100 Ethernet has no provisions in it for duplex negotiation.

Re: Ethernet0 is up, line protocol is down

I assume this is UTP ? We have UTP loopback plugs which loop the proper wires back onto themselves to make a "hard" loopback to see if the interfaces are OK. You can probably make one yourself provided you have the UTP pinouts...does the PC interface come up on a different port of the router did you say ?

Re: Ethernet0 is up, line protocol is down

There are two things that (normally) can cause this:

1) Try a new cable, in your case, probably a cross-over cable

2) An invalid ENCAPS type for Ethernet

Good Luck

Based on this in the output that you posted:

Hardware is Lance

I believe that this interface is 10 Mb half duplex. My guess is that the PC is not matching, probably because the PC is attempting to negotiate speed and duplex but the router interface does not negotiate. Try setting the PC to 10 half duplex and let us know what happens.

Re: Ethernet0 is up, line protocol is down

Kindly specify if this router is connected to any switch ,if connected with a switch ,you may use "SH IP INT BRIEF" on switch .Kindly update me on my mail id amit.kulshreshtha@yahoo.co.in. thanx

Re: Ethernet0 is up, line protocol is down

I appreciate the help. I will be checking the pc nic this after noon and all the other suggestions. I do appreciate all the help.
