fast switching

Hi all. can anyone explain very simply what is fast switching, is this turned by default? and is this only used on multilayer switches ?

does this apply to routers only? or also multilayer switches?

also pleae tell me how it work work without the fast switching mechanism? ie if switched off?

also fast switching looks the same as CEF, please tell me the difference simply ?
