FlowControl Receive On

what's the usual behavior of the switch interface when it's "flowcontrol receive on" is enabled on the interface, Does it buffer the packets for duration of time mentioned in the flowcontrol message or does it drop the packets or is it a combination of both ?

we are seeing lot of "pause input" being received on the interface , wondering if enabling "flow-control receive on"  on the interface would be of any help
