Help with error on 4507R with Sup V

Hi, I've been seeing these errors in the log of one of my 4507R switches and I need some help trying to interpret it:

Jun 18 13:32:03: %C4K_PKTPROCESSING-4-ERRORPACKET: Warning - Unexpected packet hitting output acl

As you can see from the timestamp, I'm getting these quite frequently. I don't have any outbound acl's applied anywhere so I;m confused about the warning message.

Thanks in advance,

Re: Help with error on 4507R with Sup V

I found this:

2. %C4K_PKTPROCESSING-4-ERRORPACKET: [char]

This message indicates that the software is unable to process a packet so the packet has been forwarded to the CPU instead. Because this event is unexpected, the packet is then dropped. This error indicates that the packet cannot be handled by the TCAM hardware, so the most likely cause is a hardware failure in the supervisor engine.

Recommended Action: Replace the supervisor engine.

What IOS version are you running?

12.2(20)EWA3

Re: Help with error on 4507R with Sup V

Did you recently install the SUP V?

Re: Help with error on 4507R with Sup V

No -- this particular switch has been running with it's current configuration for quite some time.

Re: Help with error on 4507R with Sup V

The supervisor engine might have failed. I would open a Cisco TAC case and see if they want to replace the supervisor.

Re: Help with error on 4507R with Sup V

If the supervisor failed, would I still be able to pass traffic through it? This particular switch handles a lot of multicast traffic and I haven't seen any problems with the multicast traffic, just the errors in the log.

Re: Help with error on 4507R with Sup V

as a mater of interest, was the CPU hitting the roof during this error ?

TIA

Not as far as I can tell... the 5/1/5 minute CPU stats were all low. I've attached the output to 'show proc cpu history'

Don't reboot the card or you'll loose it.

Whoa! Can you elaborate on that? Did you experience a similar issue, with disastrous results?

Re: Help with error on 4507R with Sup V

My apologies, Brandon. What I meant was with this error message, RMA is the way to go. But you might ask, if the sup card has failed, how come it's still operational. It will fail until you reload the supervisor engine.

Hope this helps.

Re: Help with error on 4507R with Sup V

Thanks for the clarification. I was worried that it might not even survive to the weekend. I've already got a new card on the way.
