High CPU utilization on Cisco 6509-E due to ios-base process

Hi All,

Our client is encountering high CPU utilization of almost 100% on his Cisco 6509-E. When I checked the "show process cpu" the process "ios-base" constitutes to 97% of that utilization. The IOS version that they are using is s72033-ipbasek9-vz.122-33.SXI2a.bin. Is there a known bug for this IOS? I'm trying to look for it at cisco.com but can't find any that will relate to ios-base process.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi,

It may be happening because of traffic hitting CPU. Follow these steps to troubleshoot it:

sh process cpu

- check the PID for IOS-base

tHEN DO "show process cpu detailed x" (WHERE X is process from above)

See which process is taking most and let us know.

It will be also helpful to collect traffic hitting CPU. The commands below are non-intrusive:

debug netdr cap rx

show netdr cap

maybe it would be better to use "mz" ios instead of "vz" ios. As i remember, in modular ios more one process seems bundled as one process (like ios-base)  in cpu outcome. So it can be difficult to analyse problems.
