My slave supervisor engine WS-X4516 has failed, remaining active supervisor engine is of the same model. i would like to replace the WS-X4516 with WS-X4516-10GE, below are questions i'm facing.

1. would this two engines work together.

2. i don't know the ios on the WS-X4516 -10GE, if ios is different how to rectify and what effect it will have on existing network if inserted.

Hi Ahmed,

Find below my answers inline,

1. would this two engines work together.

Yes, both the SUP engine would work together one as a active and another as a standby. All about working and redundancy is available in the below link,

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst4500/12.2/20ew/configuration/guide/RPR.html

2. i don't know the  ios on the WS-X4516 -10GE, if ios is different how to rectify and what  effect it will have on existing network if inserted.

If its a different IOS, then one of the SUP will come in RPR mode which is not like SSO. If one of the SUP fails the other SUP will bring down the entire network as the linecards will be resetted in RPR mode. It is important to keep the SUP in active/standby SSO mode.

Thanks,

Richard.
