How can I get my VLANs to talk to each other?

Hello,

I'm currently studying CCNA LAN Switching, I will try to be as detailed as possible here to make life easier,

I am using packet tracer,

For my project I have to build a VLAN, 2 buildings with 5 different departments, including guest access.

I have set up my IP addresses for the computers on the vlans, set up the vlans, and connected them to the fast ethernet ports in the switch.

So right now all of my computers are in their respective departments, all under vlan.

I have no problems sending a packet from pc to pc on the same vlan on the same switch,

My problem is that when i try to send a packet from one computer to another on a different vlan it says failed, and as far as I'm aware I have the gateway set up correctly..

My gateways are       ip addresses               subnet mask

172.16.10.0           172.16.10.1 (up to .14)          255.255.0.0 (for all of them)

172.16.20.0           172.16.20.1 (up to .16)

172.16.30.0           172.16.30.1 (up to .22)

172.16.40.0           172.16.40.1 (up to .13)

172.16.50.0           172.16.50.1 (up to .7)

I also have 3 routers:

The first - fa0/0

172.16.1.1

255.255.254.0

fa1/0

172.17.1.1

255.255.254.0

serial 2/0

172.16.2.2

255.255.254.0

the second-

fa0/0

172.16.3.3

255.255.254.0

fa 1/0

172.19.1.1

255.255.254.0

serial 2/0

172.18.1.1

255.255.254.0

the final (this is connected to the other 2 routers and also server)

fa0/0

172.16.5.5

255.255.254.0

serial 2/0

172.18.1.1

255.255.254.0

serial 3/0

172.17.1.1

255.255.254.0

Any help as to why my computers won't talk to each other will be greatly appreciated!

This looks like homework but what kind of routing have you setup between the routers?

Hi,

Based on the below info from you. I just created a topology for routers, if the below is same as your's.

--------------------------

I also have 3 routers:

The first - fa0/0

172.16.1.1

255.255.254.0

fa1/0

172.17.1.1

255.255.254.0

serial 2/0

172.16.2.2

255.255.254.0

the second-

fa0/0

172.16.3.3

255.255.254.0

fa 1/0

172.19.1.1

255.255.254.0

serial 2/0

172.18.1.1

255.255.254.0

the final (this is connected to the other 2 routers and also server)

fa0/0

172.16.5.5

255.255.254.0

serial 2/0

172.18.1.1

255.255.254.0

serial 3/0

172.17.1.1

255.255.254.0

-------------------------------------------------

How can Router1 and Router0 communicate if their corresponding serial ports are configured to be in different subnets ?

And also same with Router0 and Router2.

Configure them to be on the same subnets.

And ensure that you've enabled trunking on the ports of the switches that are connected to the routers (I mean to configure Router on a stick for inter vlan routing).
