IOS upgrade calls for 8MB flash.

7741440 bytes total (3573248 bytes free)

Is the 7741440 considered 8MB?

Do I need 8MB free or just total?

What you have is considered an 8MB flash.

If the upgrade calls for 8MB then you need 8MB free (or pretty close to it). How much of the current content would you be willing to erase?

I think that the only file that can be removed is the .bin file. Is that a sound practice? It seems as if I should get more flash so that I can have 2 versions of IOS and once one was working I could delete the older one. What is the preferred way to handle?

If you aren't going to use the browser html management function you can safely delete the html directory which frees up enough space to have 2 versions in flash . Flash is where the files are held that is all so you just need to free up enough room to get your 2 images on it . I'm pretty sure you cannot add any flash or dram to these switches , what you have is what you get to work with .
