Re: How do I set up a port for monitoring my network using telne

Hi John,

You want to monitor a specific port or specific vlan? Do you have a port which will work as a dstination port where you want to send all monitored traffic?

Do you want to capture traffic on a single switch or from multiple switch?

Are you running CATOS or IOS?

Hi John,

Have a look at this link which will help you to configure SPAN.

I am having trouble with these commands, and ask if you could type out the command for me. I having an open port of 4/36, and want to capture traffic using a sniffer for my entire network.

Sorry,

Thanks

Re: How do I set up a port for monitoring my network using telne

Hi John,

Can you confirm what do you mean by whole network? How many vlans you have in your network? What exactly you want to monitor - the traffic or the stats and utilization etc etc. Cause SPAN will and can capture only traffic coming on or moving out of specific ports or vlans.

Re: How do I set up a port for monitoring my network using telne

My network physically located in the same building, and I want to monitor utilization. I have someone mentioning to me that I should be using a sniffer, and that is what I need to set the port up for. I'm not concerned about a VLAN, as I understand that the guy who tried setting up this network never utilized any software to create a VLAN.

Thanks

John,

Sniffer will provide you with overwhelming information.

I suggest using a network monitoring tool like MRTG or solarwinds for it.
