how does a software find its devices

hi everybody,

i have a general question.

i installed an ip to usb switch today and with that device came a config software.

after installing and executing the software it found the device and showed me its ip address.

but the ip address was not one from my broadcast domain.

so iam wondering now how the software found the device, or how a process like this usually takes place? i guess it performed some kind of broadcast, but what kind of it?

couldnt be an arp as it would require an ip address. so any ideas?

thanks,

florian

how does a software find its devices

Hi florian,

That software might used the snmp string of the device to stretch the info about the switch.
Usually any software communicate with the network devices based on snmp string.

just had an idea. would it be possible that is uses arp?

e.g. src ip and mac would be these of my laptop and dest. ip a broadcast and dest. mac a specific mac, something like this: first 6 digits the oui and the last a broadcast, FF:FF:FF. so only devices of this manufacturer would reply.

but would these devices then tell their ip or only the correct mac, and then the software would perform an rarp?

just and idea. any help still appreciated!

hi latchum,

thanks for your reply.

but i thought you have to activate snmp first, before it can be used.

the device i installed today was completely new and never configured before.
