How is VSS Unit ID Assigned

Does anyone know how the VSS unit ID is derived or calculated prior to assigning ??  Cannot find this info, nor do I see a way to admin the unit ID.  This is some arbitrary number making little sense.  Looking to see how to change if it all possible to simply knowledge of who is active when you telnet it.  Until mgmt stations are installed by customer you have to poke around with show commands and log etc. as the hostname doesnt change, and could be a failover during night and customer unaware as testing as shown no disruption in traffic when down.  mgmt stations will monitor and alert to failover in near future but till then, showing customer what to look at, and brought about unit id and the fact that if it matched assigned switch # all would be simple

thanks in advance,

dave

Hi Dave

You can issue the 'switch read switch_num'  from enable mode to find out the switch ID.  If you have already converted over to a VSS configuration and need to change the switch ID's, you can use the following command:

#switch set switch_num 1
