How to boot the router from another identical router

Hi Folks,

I was just wondering if it is possible to boot the router from another router which are the same specs. I have two 1841s the first one works magnificent but the second one is giving me a lot of headache. Problems: 2-FEs ports ain't working, CF card slot is intermittent, chances are, you need to cool the router down for couple of hours or so to get it booted up from CF card otherwise it will stuck caught in a looping state boot or I don't know what is it called.

What I was trying to accomplish is connect each other via serial cable and setup ip addresses with /30 mask and then configure the faulty router in rommon to boot it from the other routers cf card slot.

Is it possible you reckon?

Thanking you in advance.

Cheers,

Paul

How to boot the router from another identical router

Hi,

With a spare 1841 I made the following experience: removed the CF card, and put the usb pen:

rommon 7 > dir usbflash0:
program load complete, entry point: 0x8000f000, size: 0x3d180
Directory of usbflash0:

2      23482572  -rw-     c1841-advipservicesk9-mz.124-21.bin

rommon 8 > boot usbflash0:/c1841-advipservicesk9-mz.124-21.bin
program load complete, entry point: 0x8000f000, size: 0x3d180

program load complete, entry point: 0x8000f000, size: 0x1664f2c
Self decompressing the image : ################################################################################################
################# [OK]

And booted ok

Can you also boot from usb with rommon command: boot usbflash0:/c1841-adventerprisek9-mz.151-4.M.bin  ?

Make sure the IOS is in the CF (where else will it reside) and copy the config into the CF.

Move the CF into your other router and boot from it.

How to boot the router from another identical router

Hi,

Did you tried to load a new ios image from tftp server to rommon?

Example config:

rommon 10 > IP_ADDRESS=192.168.1.121
rommon 11 > IP_SUBNET_MASK=255.255.255.0
rommon 12 > DEFAULT_GATEWAY=192.168.1.1
rommon 13 > TFTP_SERVER=192.168.1.30
rommon 15 > TFTP_FILE=c180xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.bin
rommon 16 > tftpdnld

          IP_ADDRESS: 192.168.1.121
      IP_SUBNET_MASK: 255.255.255.0
     DEFAULT_GATEWAY: 192.168.1.1
         TFTP_SERVER: 192.168.1.30
           TFTP_FILE: c1800xxxxxxxxxxxxx.bin

Invoke this command for disaster recovery only.
WARNING: all existing data in all partitions on flash will be lost!
Do you wish to continue? y/n:  [n]:  y

Receiving c1800xxxxxx.bin from 192.168.1.30 !!!!

rommon 20 > dir flash:
         File size           Checksum   File name
   8231296 bytes (0x7d9980)   0xd241    c1800xxxxxxxxxxx.bin
rommon 21 > boot flash:c1800xxxxxxxx.bin

You can also use the "good" router as a tftp server:

conf t

tftp-server flash:c1800xxxxxxxxxxxx.bin

Hope this helps!

How to boot the router from another identical router

Hi Pedro,

As I said abaove, the 2 fast ethernet ports of the crook router are not working so I can't perform what you've replied. Also you mentioned that I can use a router as a good TFTP server, can I get that done via serial cable connection (point to point) with both identical routers and the serial ip address as gateway for tftp purposes? Do you get what I mean? This is a home lab anyway, my goal is just to find another way on how to get the faulty up and running without accessing IOS from CF card or FE ports as they are malfunctioning.

Cheers,

Paul

I believe the CF card slot had been damaged as well as the FE ports because both CF cards are working on the good router. Tried the CF card of the good router to the bad router but to no avail. Also getting the same output which is looping

How to boot the router from another identical router

Hi,

I think it is not possible to do tftpdnld from serial!

The only way to resolve would be by using a computer device with the console cable connected and some scripting to upload the ios by xmodem.

Did you tried to connect AUX port to console of the other device? You can connect to console but I have doubts about xmodem transfers.

How to boot the router from another identical router

Hi Pedro,

Do you think transferring ios back n forth with xmodem is a temporary solution? What if I power off the router and power back on, do I need to re-do all the process again everytime I have to use this faulty router?

New Member

How to boot the router from another identical router

Hi,

It all depends from the state of the flash after reboot. In normal situation after transfering the new ios via xmodem it will write to flash and boot without problems.

If your flash is damaged and somehow corrupts the files on it after boot, the only way is to make a script that automatic loads the ios via xmodem. It takes time and needs a pc connected to console!

But first you need to test manually if this process works. Check "console download" on this link:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/routers/access/1800/1801/software/configuration/guide/rommon.html#wp1020810

In normal situation after transfering the new ios via xmodem it will write to flash and boot without problems. <=- Ok let say I managed to load the IOS to CF card through xmodem, Am i expecting that when I reload the router it will work okay without having a non stop loop. Because when I plugged this CF in to another good router it works and boots fine but not with this dodgy one.

New Member

How to boot the router from another identical router

Let's assume CF slot is damaged: xmodem upload will not work because it will try to write on CF.

Your router has an usb interface? Could you access it in rommon with "dir usbflash0:" ?

How to boot the router from another identical router

Hi,

With a spare 1841 I made the following experience: removed the CF card, and put the usb pen:

rommon 7 > dir usbflash0:
program load complete, entry point: 0x8000f000, size: 0x3d180
Directory of usbflash0:

2      23482572  -rw-     c1841-advipservicesk9-mz.124-21.bin

rommon 8 > boot usbflash0:/c1841-advipservicesk9-mz.124-21.bin
program load complete, entry point: 0x8000f000, size: 0x3d180

program load complete, entry point: 0x8000f000, size: 0x1664f2c
Self decompressing the image : ################################################################################################
################# [OK]

And booted ok

Can you also boot from usb with rommon command: boot usbflash0:/c1841-adventerprisek9-mz.151-4.M.bin  ?

What type of USB (model, make size) do you use for your router? Is it a Cisco usb one or other brand?

How to boot the router from another identical router

It is a Kingston Datatraveler 1 GB, formatted by ios.

I have another Kingston Datatraveler 4 GB that does not work, the error is the same like yours.

I don't know if there is a limitation with the capacity of the usb device, but will be difficult to find one with only 1 GB.

New Member

Well my one works in IOS but not in rommon. Maybe the rommon doesn't accept USBs with more than 1gb of size. I'll try 512mb tomorrow and let see how I go.

I found a 512mb pen drive, managed to format it with FAT16, copied the latest ios on to it but still no boot. Here's the output:

How to boot the router from another identical router

Hi,

From your output your damaged router has lesser memory (or damaged memory) then the good one  (125M to 240M).

Bad router:

c1841 platform with 131072 Kbytes of main memory

May run out of Processor memory.

PMem required: 130095460 bytes, PMem available: 125863224 bytes

PMem allocated: 125829120 bytes; IOMem allocated: 8388608 bytes

Good router

Allocating additional 12949474 bytes to IO Memory.

PMem allocated: 245366784 bytes; IOMem allocated: 23068672 bytes

Cisco 1841 (revision 7.0) with 239616K/22528K bytes of memory.

Do you have lighter ios (less memory requirements) to load in the router? Or for example version 12.4 ?

How to boot the router from another identical router

The bad router uses it's 128mb DRAM (built-in) whereas the router has another 128mb memory module installed in total of 256mb DRAM.

I came up to the conclusion that all the front ports (FEs, CFslot, USB slot) have been damaged for some reason except for console port and the WIC slots, I already tested the two WIC slots before as they are able to connect to good router's serial WIC-T1 that's why I was asking from the very start if it is possible to boot this bad router from another good router via serial (point to point) link.

Cheers,

How to boot the router from another identical router

Hi Paul,

On your second post you tried to boot from an 12.4T image:

Allocating additional 6019660 bytes to IO Memory.
PMem allocated: 119537664 bytes; IOMem allocated: 14680064 bytes

System Bootstrap, Version 12.4(13r)T, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

And the memory was OK. Now from usb you are trying to boot version 15 with higher memory requirements. Did you tried to boot from usb with 12.4?

Without ios booted, I don't see way to connect to WIC-1T!

Pedro Lereno
