How to upgrade IOS

Hi, my WS-C2970G-24T-E has very old IOS software and is acting a bit strange lately. Spontanious reboots etc. Before completely writing it off, I would like to perform an IOS upgrade to see if that fixes problems.

The switch is running IOS version 12.1(19)EA1c from SW image C2970-I6L2-M.

It has enough memory (128 and 512) to run the latest 12.2 version. I downloaded c2970-lanbase-tar.122-40.SE.tar.

I currently only have a serial cable attached.

How do I proceed with the upgrade?

Thanks, worked like a charm.

I used TFTP32 from Ph. Jounin.

First I made a backup of the current software and configuration with

copy flash:c2970-i6l2-mz.121-19.EA1c/c2970-i6l2-mz.121-19.EA1c.bin tftp

and

copy flash:config.text tftp

then i downloaded the new software with

archive download-sw tftp://172.28.10.3/c2970-lanbase-tar.122-40.SE.tar

System prompted with several easy to answer options and then reported a syuccesfull upgrade.

I reloaded the switch and it worked with the new software.

Thanks again,

Arjan
