New work site, and I have a 6509 with sup2-msfc2 running native IOS. Is there a way to tell if this is a 6509-E chassis and use a sup720? It also has the ws-c6k-6slot-fan2=(are these the high speed fans) and two 1350 watt powers supplies.

Run a "sh ver".
Ii will say
cisco WS-C6509-E
if it is the Enhanced chassis otherwise it will just say
cisco WS-6509
You can use a Sup720 on both the Enhanced and non E chassis.
With the Enhanced chassis the fan part number is WS-C6509-E-FAN
With the non E chassis it is the one you have.
You will need 2500W power supplies minimum to run the Sup720.

Try " show idprom backplane "
C6509E#show idprom backplane
IDPROM for backplane #0
(FRU is 'Catalyst 6500 9-slot backplane')
OEM String = 'Cisco Systems'
Product Number = 'WS-C6509-E' <---- This is the E chassis.
Serial Number = 'SMG0820N0UK'
Manufacturing Assembly Number = '73-9221-03'
Manufacturing Assembly Revision = 'A0'
Hardware Revision = 1.1
Current supplied (+) or consumed (-) = -
HTH,Please rate if it does.

Apologies -
the non E chassis in a "sh ver" output will be WS-C6509 not WS-6509 ( typo ).
