IGMP Snooping 3750-X

Hi,

I've a customer with a several Cisco 3750-X switches, they are not in a stack. He has IP Base which apparently does not support IGMP Snooping (IP Services is needed)

Can he upgrade one switch to IP Services, then use IGMP Snooping and connect the source to this switch, or does he need to upgrade all the 3750-X switches in his network to enable IGMP Snooping to work?

Any help appreciated.... as the additional cost is enormous

Cheers Tony

Re: IGMP Snooping 3750-X

Hi,

Q. Are mixed stacks supported?

A. It depends. The Cisco StackWise and StackWise Plus solutions are flexible enough to allow you to:

• Stack any Cisco Catalyst 3000 switch in the same stack (hardware mixed stack)

• Stack any Cisco IOS Software feature set in the same stack (software mixed stack)

One exception is the new LAN Base models being introduced with the Catalyst 3750-X and 3560-X Series, which can stack only with other LAN Base models.

From 3750-X Q&A on the following link:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps5718/ps6406/qa_c67-578933_ps10744_Products_Q_and_A_Item.html

The distributed features of IPS won't be available on 3750 which is using IPB, the centralized features still works if master is having IPS and when master switchover happens. If 3750 which is running IPB becomes master then IPS features won't work as expected! So it is recommended to use the same license level on all the switches stack.

Please find the below URL for centralized or distributed features.

Table 1. Centralized or Distributed Features in Cisco Catalyst 3750-E Series Switches

According to the comparison table, IGMP snooping is distributed so I would assume it'll not work as expected and you should use the feature set on all member switches.

Hi Andras,

Yes, I think you're correct, every switch needs to snoop the frames so every switch would need the right IOS
