Installing flash memory in Cisco 2524

Hello,

I'm trying to install a couple new sticks of flash memory in my Cisco 2524 but cannot seem to find a compatibility sheet for the router.  How do I determine which memory is compatible?

I current have:

sm732c2000a-12

and

SM732c1000bs-12

Will either work?

Thanks.

Re: Installing flash memory in Cisco 2524

Hi Scott,

How much memory is in the router at the moment? sh ver will tell you.

Without knowing the correct part numbers, I can't say if the flash simm you have is correct.

If it fits, and is the correct voltage, it's unlikely to do any damage - but I don't recommend you do this unless you're prepared to potentially brick the router and flash simm.

Your new flash won't have an IOS on it, so before you do any upgrade, tftp the current IOS to a safe place and read this article.

Hi Scott,

Have you looked at either

https://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/routers/access/2500/2524/software/user/guide/boamnt.html#wp644

or

http://ciscosystems.com/en/US/products/hw/routers/ps233/products_tech_note09186a0080094e93.shtml

I don't know what the part numbers you have are, but it looks like the 2524 chassis only has one flash simm slot. sh ver on the router will tell you the size of the flash that's currently in the router.

If I had to guess, I'd say the ones you have are 12MB.

Re: Installing flash memory in Cisco 2524

Thanks Kevin, that was helpful.  So if the memory I have is big enough (it says 8MB on it) and the correct form factor (it appears to be 80pin simm as mentioned in the manual you posted) then it should work OK?

Thanks.  How does one usually find the correct part numbers to upgrade the router. I did not see them in the manual.  Do you just have to

find a simm that says it is compatible?

Re: Installing flash memory in Cisco 2524

Hi Scott,

For the old routers, like the 2500's, I honestly dont know.I suspect experience will tell you the correct part numbers

Almost all of the newer stuff will have the part numbers listed somewhere on cisco.com.

You havn't said how much flash is in the router at the moment. The old IOS's are very small in size. Does the feature navigator tell you that you need to upgrade the flash for whatever IOS you're looking at?

Re: Installing flash memory in Cisco 2524

The router is actually not mine, I am asking for someone else.  I don't have the router in front of me at the moment so I cannot check the memory configuration or the status of the corrent mem.  I was told however that the old flash was dead and it needed a new simm.

A few retail websites show the flash I have to be compat with the 2500, so I guess we will give it a shot and see if it works.

Thanks for the help.

Re: Installing flash memory in Cisco 2524

Hi Scott,

You're welcome, and thanks for the rating.

The flash may not be dead, it is much more likely that it has become corrupt. If it's corrupt then it can be reformatted and a fresh IOS copied onto it.
